If you do any kind of crocheting, you’ve surely seen all these darling creatures dancing around Pinterest, Ravelry, Facebook and Instagram. They have been taunting me from my computer screen for years so I recently decided to try my hand at it. I was thrilled when I heard that our Facebook page, CAL Crochet-A-Long, was thinking about starting an Ami series (short for Amigurimi)! I quickly signed on as a tester and had the best time creating an adorable puppy. The series begins today, April 3rd and will include a variety of lively critters that are sure to cause cuteness overload!
Amigurimi began as the Japanese art of crocheting or knitting stuffed animals. It gained popularity in the West in the early 2000’s and now these adorable creatures seem to have taken over Pinterest and Ravelry! I’ve personally pinned so many that I’d have to live another 100 years to finish them all! 😉
You do need to know a few things before you delve into Amigurimi; things you’ll learn as you begin our series with adorable Otis Giraffe! I’ll give you a couple of tips right off the bat…TENSION MATTERS! You’ll want to use a hook that is slightly smaller than the recommended one for your yarn. Also, the invisible decrease will be your best friend. More tips from our designers later as we get into the series.
So I am now very excited to share our very first ami project with you…OTIS GIRAFFE! Isn’t he just the cutest thing? He was designed by Rebeckah from Rebeckah’s Treasures. So dang adorable! Watch our Facebook page for his big reveal this afternoon.
Rebeckah has some special treats in store for us as well…beginning with a LIVE Facebook video, tomorrow, Tuesday, April 4th at UTC-05:00 PM (1:00 PM EST/12:00 PM CST). She’ll introduce you to Otis and answer your questions.
As always, we’ll be anxious to see your projects. Be sure to share your pics on our Facebook page, CAL Crochet-A-Long.
Happy crocheting!
Margaret
