Crosses by Valerie Bracegirdle

It’s week two for the Friends Around the World 3rd Anniversary 2018 CAL and this week we’re doing Crosses!  Valerie’s second square is the companion piece to last week’s, Noughts.  Noughts and Crosses…Tic, Tac, Toe…X’s and O’s…whatever you call it…it’s a fabulous idea and we love it!!!

Just like, Noughts, Crosses combines 4 small squares with an amazing join technique, designed by Valerie.  The larger square is then finished off with three border rounds.

This square is joined in the same way as Noughts. Please pay special attention to the joining technique. Valerie has designed the join in such a fashion that it creates a lovely, textured zig zag pattern (see the photos below).

I LOVE this join so much that I plan to use it again and again in other projects!!!

So here’s some extra pattern notes to help you with the join…

The pattern indicates that you should place the squares side by side (right side up).  When you approach the join this way, you will place your hook into the chain spaces from the top (right side) of the adjoining square. While still a simple technique, this way is sightly more advanced as you need to keep your squares flat with the edges together.  It’s a little tricky but this is the only way you will achieve the zig zag design.

Just be patient and go slow at first while looking at the enlarged photo below until you get the gist of it!

Don’t forget the extra three rounds you’ll need to do around each square to prepare for joining and finishing your blanket. Here is the link for directions on adding the extra finishing rounds.

This will be necessary to get your squares to the proper ending stitch count.  It will vary slightly from week to week because the squares vary in ending stitch counts so be sure to follow the directions for each square. You may choose to add these extra rounds now or later.  This week, the instructions are the same as for Noughts as follows:

Round 1 – Join in any corner chsp, ch1, *(sc, ch2, sc) in corner chsp, sc in next 41sts* 4 times. (43sts, ch2) per side

Round 2 – Join in any corner chsp, ch1, *(sc, ch2, sc) in corner chsp, sc in next 43sts* 4 times. (45sts, ch2) per side

Round 3 – Join in any corner chsp, ch1, *(2sc, ch2, 2sc) in corner chsp, skip hidden st, sc in next 44sts* 4 times. (48sts, ch2) per side

That pretty much covers it for this week!  Please keep those squares coming and post them on our Facebook group page CAL – Crochet A Long.  And, of course, let us know if you have any questions!

See you next week…same time, same place!
