Week 8 of the Friends Around the World 3 CAL takes us to Arizona where the desert sunsets take your breath away.
This week’s square was designed by Kristin Hartt. Kristin came to our attention with her design for the Harmony Ruana Shawl which was featured as a CAL earlier in 2018. We were super excited to see what she would come up with for a “Friends” square.
The evening sky of Arizona inspired her design for this square. If you look at the photos below, you’ll see why! The many varied colors, as day turns to night, create many textures which she incorporated into her design. Kristin is living the dream as a Fiber Artist. She has a love of all things crafty, but most especially fiber in any form. Recently she has started designing her own crochet and felting pieces. Kristin lives with her husband Michael and Pitbull, Ellie in Arizona. She has a degree in Advertising Design and her quest to learn new things fuels the creativity that inspires her fiber designs.

Important Additional Pattern Info
Don’t forget you will need to add an extra three rounds to your square to achieve the final 48 st/side count which is necessary for joining. You can find the instructions for all squares here. Translations for these additional rounds can be found here. The extra rounds will vary slightly from week to week because the squares vary in ending stitch counts so be sure to follow the directions for each square.
Arizona ends with a 41 stitch count on each side plus 4 corner stitches. You will need to add an additional 7 stitches per side plus 4 ch2 space corners for a total of 48 stitches per side.
Rnd 1: Begin with a standing sc (stsc) in any corner st. Ch2, sc in same st. Sc in each of the next 41 sts. *(Sc, ch2, sc) in corner st. Sc in each of the next 41 sts* repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join with slst to beginning stsc. (43sts, ch2/side)
Rnd 2: Slst to corner ch2, *(sc, ch2, sc) in corner chsp. Sc in each of the next 43 sts* repeat from * to * 3 more times. Slst to beginning sc. (45 sts, ch2/side)
Rnd 3: Slst to corner ch2, *(2sc, ch2, 2sc) in corner chsp. Skip the next “hidden” st. Sc in each of the next 44 sts* repeat from * to * 3 more times. Slst to beginning sc. (48 sts, ch 2/side)
Have fun with this block and if you get the chance to go out and spend some time looking at the sunset…GO!!!
See you next week!
