It is a special day indeed, to begin this beautiful shawl/wrap in honor of a beautiful and well-loved Princess. Today we present Week 1, the Mughal motif. Exquisite in its design, Saleha Waseem, from Crochet Karma has done an incredible job to honor Jahanara Begum, a Sufi Princess. If you have not had the chance to read the introduction, please do so before you begin. You will not only find all of the information you need as far as materials, but also learn a little about Jahanara herself. To recap some of it, she was the eldest daughter of the Mughal Emperor Sha Jahan and his wife Mughal Empress Mumtaz Mahal. After her mother’s death she became her father’s closest confidante and advisor. Despite being raised in an opulent environment, she was truly loved by all and became one of the most powerful women in Medieval India. Some words that would describe this Princess, would be humanitarian, compassionate, loyal, and courageous. She never married but devoted her life to the benefit of others. She built beautiful public places such as Mosques, gardens, inns and bazaars. She had her own ships and had them bring rice to the needy in Mecca and Medina.
With all of this information in mind, enjoy working on this special shawl, and let her beauty, grace and elegance surround you.
Here are some of the beautiful motifs our testers have made. Be inspired, get creative. We look forward to seeing yours as well.
