FATW5 – Week 8 – Popcorn Explosion

This week we venture over to the United Kingdom with Kathryn Middleton as our next featured designer for two lovely squares. This week we have “Popcorn Explosion”, which is a beautiful creation full of texture creating a lovely 3D effect.

Kathryn is the owner/creator/designer for AmyJ Designs and has a Facebook Group for her designs which can be found HERE as well as her Ravelry store which can be found HERE and her Instagram account which can be found HERE. She has been an avid crocheter for as long as she can remember and we are so thankful that she decided to give designing a go!

The Miarly CAL was her first ever published crochet along, and is still available as a paid pattern on Ravelry. She created something amazing and refreshing from the “old standby” patterns by combining them into a new layout and then took it one step further and gave us not only one but three choices in how we would like our blanket to be finished. The photos of this CAL bring a new life to the “ripple” on Instagram and Facebook.

Kathryn has many other designs available and has recently announced her new CAL….. sneak peeks have already been posted to her Facebook Group and the “countdown” has begun for the “Big Reveal” on June 8th. The CAL will be free in her group and will release July 1, 2020.

Sneak peek of the upcoming CAL….

Kathryn also had a Crochet Retreat planned for March 2020, before the Coronavirus pandemic created the need to postpone the event. The Crochet Retreat was to be held at the Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria Sheffield, in Sheffield, United Kingdom, and was to include workshops and a specially designed project. Please stay tuned for more details on when this Crochet Retreat will be rescheduled for those of us lucky enough to be able to attend…….

And here is a bit about Kathryn and her square, Popcorn Explosion, from Kathryn herself……..

Hi, my name is Kathryn and I am the face behind AmyJ and AmyJ Designs.

I have been crafting for as long as I can remember and as a child was taught to knit, embroider & crochet by my Mum, Gran & Nana respectively. I have switched between these over the years but recently crochet has become my passion.

I live with my significant other in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District. I have 3 beautiful grown up daughters and 2 equally gorgeous granddaughters.

My fourth daughter, Amy Jennifer, was born sleeping. I turned to crochet in those dark days following her birth as a way of filling my time.

I’ve now retired from the ‘day job’ and have lots of time to indulge myself and whilst I have adapted many patterns over the years I had never designed anything from scratch until 2 years ago – now I can’t stop. I ran my first CAL last year and am hosting my first crochet retreat this year (along with another CAL)

When I decided to start designing I also decided that I could use this to raise money for SANDS the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society, so the greatest portion of the proceeds are donated to them. I love what I do and hope you do too.

Popcorn Explosion

Although I have crocheted since being a child I had many years of not doing any. The thing that brought me back was the beautiful textures I was seeing – a far cry from the thread doilies of years ago! I love the texture you can create with crochet and Popcorn Explosion has plenty of that. I wanted the bobbly centre flower to explode out towards the edges but most of all I wanted texture.

And now on to the important bits for today:

And of course the 3 extra rounds will be posted on Monday……

Be sure to stop by Kathryn’s social media and follow along with her for what’s coming next……

Until next week with the next AmyJ Designs pattern…..

Happy Crocheting,
