FATW5 – Week 17 – Windmill

Oh what a beautiful treat we have this week for FATW5….. but first, let me apologize. There were some technical issues that caused the 3 Extra Rounds for Week 16 and the DOGGHAN blogs to not upload. And then…. I was moving from one state to another, in the middle of Tropical Storm Isaias, just to arrive to my destination and have no house to move into as the contractor did not finish the flooring install. My apologies to all of you who have not been able to work the 3 Extra Rounds waiting for the article….. and to those of you who sorted out the new stitch count on your own! I will have the Week 16 Extra Rounds plates ASAP…….

And now….. on to Week 17! This week we are again in the Netherlands with Naomi and Jolanda of Haakplein

Windmills are of course one of the most commonly associated images with the Netherlands. The most famous windmills are the windmills at Kinderdijk which are a group of 19 monumental windmills in the Alblasserwaard polder, in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. Most of the mills are part of the village of Kinderdijk. Built in 1738 and 1740 it is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands and one of the best-known Dutch tourist sites.

This is a list of the 19 mill:

And then there are the windmills of Zaanse Schans, which is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk, Netherlands, which is best known for its collection of historic windmills and houses. From 1961 to 1974 the old buildings from all over the Zaanstreek were relocated using trailers creating a neighbourhood which is a popular tourist attraction as it has 7 museums and is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the Netherlands.

The windmills were built after 1574:

Windmills continue to be a large part of the Dutch scenery, even in modern times….. and help to keep the polder dry.

This week’s square depicts the windmills of the Netherlands perfectly…..

And now the IMPORTANT parts…. this week you will download the patterns from our blog again!
