FATW6 – Adventures in Mosaic Crochet – Geometric Theme – Strip 11 – Retro Vibes by daisyknots

Strip 10, Retro Vibes is designed by Moira Douglas of daisyknots. She is located in the UK and is also the designer that gave us the great Zig Zag border for all of these FATW6 CAL blankets. Then of course, you have seen her beautiful Mosaic Sampler that was a CAL with us in the past, and some of her other spectacular mosaic designs such as Turkish Delight and Windswept. All overlay mosaic, with tutorials (in her soothing voice) and quite easy to follow.

Let’s read more about Moira Douglas in her own words as well as her inspiration for this pattern, Retro Vibes.

“Hi! I’m Moira, the designer behind daisyknots designs and video tutorials.

I’ve always been a “crafty” person, working with materials and fabrics from a very young age.  Unfortunately this wasn’t considered a “proper “career choice in the 1970s.  The first 20+ years of my working life were spent in the emerging IT sector. Latterly I enjoyed designing websites, as this worked around my children’s school day.

However, I felt something was still missing.  I took the scary step to change direction and study for a degree in design at university.  I was ecstatic when my application was accepted and four years later I qualified, top of my class, with a First in Textile and Surface Design. I was even more elated when at the New Designers Degree show I was shortlisted from over 2000 new designers for “New Designer of the Year”.
I subsequently trained as a high school teacher, and taught textiles at my local high school for a few years, with the intention of designing part time.  I found that I really enjoyed encouraging others to learn new skills but that school teaching was all consuming. As a result, a few years back, I took the plunge and decided to focus full-time on daisyknots.

Initially my emphasis was on running local craft classes on macrame, crochet and embroidery, as I feel it’s important these skills are not lost.  These classes were very popular and I started to get requests from farther afield.  To reach a wider audience I, therefore, taught myself how to record and edit online tutorials.  Around the same time I discovered mosaic crochet and completely fell in love with it. It ticked all my design boxes and I found that writing patterns and creating the tutorials to go with them met my love for sharing and teaching too!  So finally, nearing my 60th birthday, I have my dream job. I don’t think retirement is on the horizon anytime soon!

Retro Vibes is worked in overlay mosaic crochet with the centre band of colour being worked in tapestry mosaic crochet. The design is influenced by the bold colours and geometric shapes beloved of the 60s and 70s. I thought it fitting to give homage to this era, in this my 60th year with a design that is reminiscent of the textiles and patterns that I was surrounded by in my childhood. Though I will admit I have put a contemporary twist on the colours, choosing to use dark grey teamed with bright yellow instead of the sludgy brown that seemed to be so predominant in my childhood.

Even though you might not be a child of the 60s like I am, have fun with Retro Vibes, put on some 60s or 70s music and enjoy the ride.

Isn’t this a gorgeous photo from her? As a child of the sixties myself, I am looking forward to doing something special for ME with this particular strip. Truly a beautiful pattern and Moira Douglas really is a lovely person. You will want to watch her tutorials just to hear her voice. I must admit, she is the reason why I personally got addicted to mosaic crochet. She makes it so easy to follow. Do check out all of her patterns, there is something for everyone. Blankets, pillows, hats, a sweet square that was recently released for Granny Square Day, and some sweet holders to put flower/plant pots into. Just look at these cuties in one of her photos. These dress up a pretty plant and would make great hostess gifts.

Our makers got very creative in working Retro Vibes and all are superb!
